The Mandrake reveals itself gradually. From an understated frontage on Newman Street, the hotel opens into a densely planted internal courtyard where hanging jasmine, terraces and art installations create a very different atmosphere from Fitzrovia outside. Bedrooms and suites use dark materials, theatrical lighting and contemporary art, with several categories oriented towards the courtyard or private terraces. YOPO brings South American influences to the principal restaurant. After dark, the bars and courtyard become the property’s main social spaces. Art is integrated throughout rather than confined to a gallery. The suspended garden at the centre remains the strongest architectural and visual counterpoint to the street beyond.
