The architecture carries much of the drama at L’oscar London. This Grade II-listed former Baptist headquarters near Holborn retains Arts and Crafts details and ecclesiastical proportions, reworked by Jacques Garcia with jewel-toned fabrics, dark woods, mirrored surfaces and marble. Its 39 rooms and suites continue the theatrical language on a more intimate scale. The ground-floor restaurant occupies a richly decorated room beneath elaborate lighting. The former chapel survives as one of the building’s most distinctive event spaces. Covent Garden and the British Museum are close, but carved stone, high ceilings and the layered interiors give the hotel a stronger sense of place than its central location alone.
